IIT BombayA brain child of Prof. DB Phatak, Ekalavya IIT Bombay aims to enable better educational order and facilities for Indian students by using information and communication technologies to develop innovative channels of knowledge dissipation. The Ekalavya portal is an attempt to generate an interactive platform for the creation, absorption, dissemination and usage of knowledge for the well being of the individual and the society. It is a significant step forward to bring together students, teachers, and working professionals to meaningfully enhance the productivity of the group and spread knowledge.
All the work under the mission project is released under Open Source. Consequently most of the tools and software environment used in our R&D, are also from Open Source Software(OSS). You will thus be working on Ubuntu (a variant of Linux), and using Java, Python, MYSQL/Postgress, GCC, open source flash, android IDE and other such packages. Even if you do not have adequate exposure to these, you will get ample opportunity to learn them during your internship. All they expect is that you are able to learn fast, and are able to meaningfully use what you learn. You will be engaged for a period of 8 weeks. Your project leader will evaluate your work at the end of the internship. They expect everyone to work hard, and successfully complete the assignments well in advance of the last date.
Who can apply: To be eligible for this IIT Bombay internship, you must satisfy the following requirements:
  • Students graduating in Computer Science/Engineering, IT, or Electronics.
  • Who will be completing 3rd year in April/May 2016. Students completing 2nd year, with exceptional academic performance and other achievements may also be considered.
  • Students with experience in programming will be preferred.
Additional Software Skills Quota: Those who are not selected will get another opportunity of entering the internship program by demonstrating their software skills. Participants will have to join and complete the 8 week MOOC program on C Programming which will be launched by IIT Bombay on January 26th. An email will be sent to all registered participants to enrol in the program which will begin in first week of February. As a part of the MOOC course, they will be hosting programming contests towards the end of March. Performance in the course and the programming contests will be used to select software skills quota candidates.
Projects: Several R&D projects are currently underway in the department, under the National Mission. The technologies you will be working on will include Linux, C/C++, Java, Servlet, JSP, Android, PHP, MySQL, PostgreSQL, Python, Apache, Tomcat, etc., for software projects. Clicker system development is based on TI chips, which have a micro-controller and a combined radio/transmit-receive facility.
Location: IIT Bombay
Duration: This eight week IIT Bombay internship program generally commences in second week of May and ends in 1st week of July. You have to strictly adhere to this time period. Requests to adjust the time period will not be entertained.
Stipend: You will have to manage expenses during your stay in IIT Bombay on your own.
